The Ute Indians originally used this area around Utah Lake as a seasonal hunting and fishing ground. The name of the city is taken from the American Fork River. The streams running into Utah Lake were known as forks. American Fork was settled in the summer of 1850 by Mormon pioneers who named the settlement after the stream.
